What is an immobilized response?
Apr 04, 2023When we enter an immobilized response (overwhelm, shut down, depression, burnout), our body is moving towards self-preservation. We don’t have the tools and resources to navigate the intensity or quantity of stressors. So your body’s call for rest (like having a weekend of takeout, Netflix, and your sofa) is exactly what is needed. This helps you prepare to tackle stress again. Think of it like a reset. After a period of rest, you might have the energy and the perspective to look at the big picture once again and develop your plan to navigate your stressors.
As we move out of that immobilized state, it is normal to re-experience a mobilized response. A mobilized response (think anxiety, irritability, fight/flight type responses) is where we typically still have hope that our tools and resources might work.
